Current Tax Scams

Digital Asset Compliance

Fraudsters are mailing fake IRS letters directing recipients to a fraudulent website that mimics IRS.gov and instructs them to register for a nonexistent "Digital Asset Compliance Portal."  If you receive a letter like this, do not respond and do not scan the QR code.

BOI

Scammers are contacting businesses threatening fines if Beneficial Ownership Information is not filed.  The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) is no longer collecting info from US businesses and is destroying BOI data previously collected.

Ignore the request.

Tax Debt Settlement or Relief

Shady companies pressure taxpayers to use their services to settle tax liabilities.  They promise to relieve your tax debt for “pennies-on-the-dollar.”  They rush you to pay them for this service.  Contact a trusted tax professional to determine if you qualify for an Offer in Compromise.

Charities

Fake charities take advantage of the public’s generosity, especially during a crisis or disaster.  A donation or website link may not go where you think it will.  Contact the organization directly.  Verify the validity of an organization's tax-exempt status here:

IRS Online Account Help

Scammers offer services to help you create an IRS account so they can obtain personal information from you.  Create your own IRS account(s) here:

Disasters

IRS impersonators call disaster victims, offering to “help” file casualty loss claims. Get help on the IRS disaster assistance line at 866-562-5227
